I’ve been working in PHP with images and trying to get the GD and ImageMagick tools to work with my Windows 7-based PHP dev machine. My production servers are all LINUX because, let’s face it, who has time to reboot Windows that many times a day! But at home I’ve got a Windows PC that I develop on and I learned a very important tip after scouring Google for hours (over the course of two days) to find a solution.

It’s a solution that once you see it you bang your head into a wall, pound on your desk and then write a blog post in the hopes of saving some other guy all the trouble!

Life on the road

Well, it’s that time of year again. Right around the 4th of July it’s time to head out on vacation to visit family and friends in Pennsylvania and hit a stop or two along the way. Coming from south Alabama, there’s just something always special about a 1,000 mile road trip (one way) with my wife (who’s a saint to put up with it) and young daughter.

Headrest DVD PlayerThe greatest invention ever conceived was the portable DVD player. It is absolutely wonderful and never take a long road trip without it. Still, she’ll enjoy coloring until she gets motion sickness and will probably sleep a lot too. Not a lot of fun being strapped into a car seat in the back seat for hours on end (which probably seems something close to eternity to a toddler!)

This year we’ll stop at the US Space and Rocket Center to checkout a few rocket ships, which marginally interest my daughter. She was very interested in the dinosaur exhibit, but when they don’t look like the ones on Barney she might not be so interested. A pile of bones re-assembled probably will lose something on a girl her age. Still she can’t wait to go.

Neither can I.

WordPress Mobile Edition rocks my iPhone

So I thought I’d mention a little something about WordPress Mobile Edition which is sort of a hybrid plugin and theme that pushes a nice mobile-ized version of my blog to those of you surfing around with iPhones, Androids and other such things. Although I miss my lovely theme that I found on the desktop version it does make the site much more “surfable.”

WordPress Mobile Edition ScreenshotNow I have tried Mobile Edition before with a client’s blog site and it ripped it to shreds! When you start getting complex and moving away from the typical blog-type stuff you’ve got to make all sorts of tweaks and changes to the ME theme as well as your site’s theme. So it’s not for everyone. But I am finding it’s working well with this site.

It’s easy to install…one file in the plugin folder and a theme folder in the themes folder. Activate and viola, it’s working well on my phone so far.

My new blog

Well, I finally decided to put a nice little blog on the net to fill the blogosphere with the mindless drivel that spills from my mind while it floats around inside my brain.

Absolutely Nothing Road SignThe first thing I want to talk about is how my spell check just indicated that blogosphere isn’t a valid word. It wants to use heliosphere, which I just spelled correctly on the first try! Too bad the grammar check doesn’t work with the spell check to figure out that I wasn’t talking about a heliosphere.

Speaking of which, what the heck does that mean?! Webster.com…”the regions in space influenced by the sun or solar wind.” Okay, I didn’t think there was any air in space. That’s why they say that all the big explosions in Star Wars wouldn’t have had any sound. So what’s a solar wind?

Oh well. I’ve got other things to do than worry about the solar wind. It sounds like there’s a thunderstorm outside anyway so I should probably get off the Internet before the power failure that’s about to occur does it for me!

Ray William Johnson is a genious

Ray William JohnsonThis guy dropped out of Columbia to pursue a career reviewing viral videos on YouTube. I wish I could have pursued such a career 15 years ago when I was around his age! Instead I opted to go ahead and graduate before taking a regular job, then trading that for another regular job, then working two regular jobs at the same time just to pay the bills and then taking another regular job that doesn’t pay enough so I’m starting a company…while working that underpaid and under appreciated job.

This guy watches fat guys doing belly flops in swimming pools while simultaneously insulting the size of various individual’s man-hoods and is probably making bank! Only in America!

By the way, he just did an interview for Forbes magazine after becoming the most watched YouTube channel with over 3.9 million subscribers.
